Connect Platform: A Historic Step for Returning Iranian Migrants
Returning Talent: Pioneering Technology Projects Replace Military Service

The Connect platform has made a groundbreaking move by facilitating the return of Iranian migrants through innovative measures, including replacing mandatory military service with technology projects.
During the panel discussion titled “Returning Talent: The Missing Human Capital in Technology Development,” experts highlighted the pivotal role of the Connect platform in reversing brain drain and encouraging Iranian specialists to return home.
Mohammad Shokoohi-Yekta, a Stanford alumnus and AI specialist at Snap, shared his personal experience: “For many Iranian migrants, mandatory military service posed a significant challenge to returning. However, the Connect platform’s initiative to substitute military service with technology projects has removed this barrier, enabling me and others to come back.”
Shokoohi-Yekta also addressed obstacles such as bureaucratic inefficiencies, lack of collaboration, and underutilization of returning talents in key sectors. He emphasized, “Though the system needs reform, the process is beyond individual capacity. Yet, I remain committed to contributing to my country despite these challenges.”
Highlighting the role of Connect in fostering global connections, he added, “For those abroad, staying connected to Iran does not necessarily require physical presence. Online lectures, financial contributions, and remote collaboration are effective ways to support the country’s progress.”
The panel featured prominent figures, including Seyed Mirabolhassan Vaezi, an MIT and Stanford graduate and professor at Sharif University of Technology, alongside Atefeh Alipoor, a biomedical researcher in Japan and faculty member specializing in nanobiotechnology.
Shokoohi-Yekta concluded, “While migration often stems from personal and professional dissatisfaction, returning talent must come prepared to face challenges and contribute meaningfully to Iran’s advancement. Platforms like Connect are instrumental in bridging this gap.”
