- A Beacon of Scientific Achievement
The Mustafa Prize, a significant scientific and technological event, is currently being held in Iran. This prestigious award recognizes top researchers and scientists from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.
It symbolizes scientific excellence, honoring the outstanding scientists and pioneers of scientific and technological cooperation and development in the world.
- The Prize and Its Impact
First awarded in 2015, the Mustafa Prize has been called the “Muslim Nobel” by some.
It is granted biennially during the Islamic Unity week in Iran, with laureates receiving a $500,000 prize, a medal, and a diploma.
The award seeks to honor Muslim researchers and scientists, regardless of their domicile. Non-Muslim scientists in Muslim countries are also eligible for this prestigious award.
The Mustafa Prize is awarded in four categories: Information and Communication Science and Technology, Life and Medical Science and Technology, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and All Areas of Science and Technology.
These areas encompass a broad range of fields, including natural sciences, mathematics, statistics, information and communication technologies, engineering, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, veterinary health, and welfare, as well as cognitive science and Islamic economics and banking.
- The Mustafa Prize Foundation and Governance
The Mustafa Prize is administered by Iran’s government and the Mustafa Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF).
The foundation has established several committees to organize the prize, including the Mustafa Prize Policy Making Council established in 2013.
The MSTF Advisory Board consists of volunteer academics, public sector officials, technologists, and business leaders from the Islamic community.
The board advises and recommends the MSTF at a strategic level, helping it achieve its objectives through public awareness, fundraising, and networking.
- Laureates of the Mustafa Prize
The inaugural prize in 2016 recognized the efforts of leading researchers and scientists from OIC countries. Since then, each award ceremony has highlighted the contributions of eminent scientists to their respective fields. Laureates are awarded in two categories, and each laureate receives a sum of USD 500,000, financed through endowments made to the Prize.
The 5th Mustafa Prize ceremony will award Professor Ahmed Hassan and Professor Omid Farrokhzad for their significant contributions in their respective fields of science and information and communication technology and science biotechnology and medicine.
Other notable laureates include Professor Samia Khoury from Lebanon, Professor Murat Avisal from Turkey, and Professor Ahmed Fozi Ismail from Cambodia.
- The Future of the Mustafa Prize
With its growing importance and global recognition, the Mustafa Prize is set to continue its legacy of honoring scientific excellence. The next Mustafa Prize Award Ceremony is scheduled for 2023, and the MSTF invites the scientific community to join this celebration of scientific achievement and cooperation.
The Mustafa Prize represents a significant step in recognizing and promoting scientific and technological advancements in the Islamic world.
It is also a testament to the Islamic world’s contributions to global scientific development.
The Prize continues to inspire and encourage researchers and scientists in their pursuit of groundbreaking scientific discoveries and innovations.
